How to Plan a Corporate Team Building Event in Edinburgh (Without It Being Boring)

May 14, 2026 by JamesV Leave a Comment

Let’s be honest about corporate team building. Done badly, it’s one of the most dreaded items on the company calendar. People turn up, go through the motions, and spend the whole time counting down to when they can leave. Done well, it’s genuinely one of the best things a company can do — something that creates shared memories, breaks down barriers between teams, and gives everyone something to talk about for weeks afterwards. It is one most people will be wanting to come to next time.

The difference between the two usually comes down to one thing: whether people actually want to be there. Here’s how to plan a corporate team building event in Edinburgh that falls into the second category.

Start with the format, not the venue

Most corporate event planning starts in the wrong place. People book a venue first, then try to figure out what to do in it. The better approach is to decide on the format first — what kind of experience you want people to have — and then find a venue that suits it.

The best corporate team building formats have a few things in common: they’re inclusive (so nobody feels left out or embarrassed), they’re competitive enough to create genuine energy, and they give people a reason to interact with colleagues they don’t normally work with. A quiz night ticks all three boxes — especially when it uses technology to keep everyone involved rather than relying on a few loud personalities to carry the team.

Choose Edinburgh venues that actually work for groups

Edinburgh has no shortage of great venues for corporate events. The key is finding somewhere with enough space that teams aren’t crammed together, decent acoustics so people can actually hear each other (and the host), and ideally some flexibility on layout so you can arrange tables to suit your group size.

Edinburgh’s hotel function rooms are a popular choice for larger corporate events — the Scotsman Hotel, for example, has hosted some excellent SpeedQuizzing evenings including a recent event for Lloyds Banking Group. For smaller teams, a private dining room or a hired-out pub works well. The key is making sure the space feels right for the activity, not just ticking a box on a venue checklist.

Make it genuinely inclusive

The biggest failure mode for corporate team building is creating an event that works brilliantly for some people and badly for others. Activities that require a high level of physical fitness, artistic ability, or niche knowledge will always leave some participants on the sidelines.

A well-designed quiz night avoids this by covering a broad range of topics — general knowledge, music, pictures, current events — so that everyone on the team has something they can contribute. The SpeedQuizzing format helps further by giving every individual, or team, their own device to answer on, so quieter team members are just as involved as the more outgoing ones.

Build in a social element

The quiz itself is the main event, but the best corporate evenings leave time for people to actually talk to each other. A drinks reception before the quiz, a break between rounds, and time to celebrate the winners afterwards all give people the unstructured social time that corporate events often skip over in favour of cramming in more activities.

If you want to keep things going after the quiz, James also runs Premier Disco and can provide a DJ set to close out the evening — which turns a quiz night into a full evening of entertainment without needing to organise anything separately.

Get the logistics right

A few practical things that make a big difference:

  • Timing: Evening events after work tend to get better engagement than daytime ones where people feel they’re being pulled away from their desks.
  • Group size: SpeedQuizzing works for teams of any size, from a small team of 20 up to large events of 200 or more. The format scales well.
  • Catering: Finger food during the quiz keeps energy up without disrupting the flow. A sit-down dinner works better before or after rather than during.
  • Teams: Mixing people from different departments usually produces more interesting results — and more useful cross-team connections — than keeping existing work teams together.

Book something people will actually enjoy

If you’re planning a corporate team building event in Edinburgh and want something that gets a genuine response rather than polite participation, a SpeedQuizzing night is worth serious consideration. We’ve delivered events for corporate clients including Lloyds Banking Group, and the format consistently produces the kind of energy and engagement that makes an evening memorable.
