The Nearest Wins question closes every Premier SpeedQuizzing quiz night. No team needs to get the exact answer. The team whose answer is closest to the correct number wins the points. It’s the format that can shake up the leaderboard right at the final moment.
How it works
The quizmaster shows a question on screen where the answer is a number. It could be a year, a distance, a quantity, a price, a population, or a world record. Teams enter whatever number they think is correct. When the timer ends, the quizmaster reveals the correct answer, and the screen displays every team’s answer alongside it. The team whose answer is closest wins the points.
There are no wrong answers in Nearest Wins — only closer and further away. A team that has no idea can still guess a number and end up winning the points. It just takes everyone else to guess in the wrong direction.
There’s genuine science behind why a room full of guesses can land so close to the truth. When statistician Francis Galton studied a crowd guessing the weight of an ox, none of the individual guesses were right — but when he averaged them all together, he arrived at a near-perfect estimate. Nearest Wins works on the same idea: get enough teams guessing, and the room as a whole is usually smarter than any one team in it.
