Quiz The Season To Be Jolly with a Dramatic Win

Another thrilling finish marked the conclusion of our quiz at Potterrow Dome this Sunday. With seven teams in striking distance of the leading team, Greece On The Ruins Of Quizzolonghi, it all came down to a riveting nearest wins question.
Take a well-deserved break after your exams, and let’s reconvene on Sunday, January 14th, 2024. Why not bring along some friends to make the quiz even bigger and more exciting?
Technical Issues?
After last week’s technical debacle, it was a relief to experience a trouble-free full quiz night. We were fortunate to have 17 teams for the last quiz before Christmas. As expected, student study leave and exams had a slight impact on our team numbers.
Our Winners This Week
“Quiz The Season To Be Jolly” emerged as the late winner, securing victory by only 10 points ahead of Greece On The Ruins Of Quizzolonghi, with the Biomed Bitches closely trailing in third place. The next five teams were all within 101 points of the eventual winners. In fourth place, a new team of lecturers, Cheemy Christmas, was pleased with such a close finish, although the nearest wins question didn’t quite go as planned!
Scoreboard
Nearest Win
“Quiz The Season To Be Jolly” clinched victory this week on the very last question of the quiz. Any one of 8 teams could win if they managed to get the closest answer to the nearest wins question.
The question was…….
According to worldatlas.com, Sweden, Norway and Finland are the three countries of the world that have the most islands. The vast majority of these islands are uninhabited. In total, how many islands do these three countries have between them?
Answer: 685574
(Sweden 267,570 + Norway 239,057 + Finland 178,947)
“Quiz The Season To Be Jolly” was nearest with their answer of 249,075, securing 100 points and launching them into first place from seventh.
Additional Embarrassing Note
Our teaching team, Cheemy Christmas, had a member who is a specialist in all things Scandinavian, even lecturing at the University of Edinburgh. His guess for the nearest wins question was a lowly 12,000. Needless to say, he was humbled and not looking forward to admitting his error to his students on Monday.
Worst Team Of The Night
Tonight the crappy team award goes to a new team, Scicommers, finishing last.
Changes!
Our next quiz is on Sunday 14th January 2024. I will be introducing some new features to the quiz to make it a bit more interesting, especially for the teams performing nearer the bottom of the scoreboard.
- The team finishing last each week will be awarded 50 numpty points at the next quiz they attend giving them a little boost to help them along.
- I will be giving away a free answer on the day of each quiz. The team answering the relevant question correctly first will receive a 50-point bonus added to their score.
- The most impactful change of them all: Since several teams may never win the quiz, I am introducing a handicapping system to help level the playing field.
These changes will result in more teams chasing a win each night. They will also make the best teams work harder to secure another win.
Our quiz is for fun, and I believe every team should have the chance to win at some point. Often, the same select few teams rank the highest after each quiz, and the ‘poorer’ teams may feel disheartened and even stop attending. The handicapping will address this and, hopefully, see our numbers grow towards a more evenly competitive quiz.
To help with the implementation of the handicapping, each team will need to find a team name and stick with the same name each week.
And Finally…
Have a great Christmas and New Year and best wishes for your success in all your exams.
