We had another great turnout again this month for The Old Colliery SpeedQuiz. It is good to see the local community coming together to enjoy a fantastic nights entertainment.
New Teams
Keira7 was the surprise act this month winning at their very first attempt. Another new team, Prestige Worldwide, put in a good nights work to finish third also on their third attempt. Our two other new teams held up the table from the bottom. Not to worry guys, that was your first attempt. It is always a bit difficult getting used to a new way of quizzing and most of the other teams have been doing this a while. Add to that, the next time you visit us, your handicap will place you in a far better position to compete for a win.
Keira7 now set the new standard at The Old Colliery as the team to beat. I can see them going on to be near to the top of the table every week. The handicap they have will make the win a bit more challenging and opening the winning position to more teams.
I ‘think’ you all enjoyed your first visit and I trust we will all be seeing you again soon.
Scoreboard
Even though we had a runaway winner this week, the rest of the regular teams were all nicely bunched up together. Five of our regular teams fell within a 70 point margin. This is evidence that the handicapping system is working perfectly.
Last month’s winners, The Don’t Know It Alls, had a poor result finishing 7th. That doesn’t mean they performed poorly, the question content and themes change at every quiz and maybe this just didn’t fall into their areas of knowledge.
Alexas Trivia Heroes, second last, were very animated every time they won the maximum bonus points. This tells me that these guys don’t expect to be the brainiacs of the venue but are just out for fun! Excellent, this quiz is not meant to be taken seriously. Just come along for a bite to eat, a few drinks, get picked on by the quiz host for being thick and ENJOY!
The Weekenders were out for a family dinner and were pulled into the quiz unexpectedly. I am pretty sure you guys had fun, don’t be strangers!
Jackpot Games
We had a winner this week on Take It Or Leave It. Well, there is a winner every week on this game but £10 is not to be sneered at. A guaranteed win every time with this with prizes ranging from £1 up to whatever the jackpot rises to. Next time the jackpot will again be £50.
This is a small jackpot game and due to the nature of the way the payout works, I don’t see the jackpot getting much above £50. Still, a nice wee win for a lucky quizzer every month.
There was no winner again in Open The Box so this will again be set at £100 for next month.
Open The Box accumulates a jackpot pretty fast. This can go unwon for a considerable time and every time it is not won, the jackpot grows. We recently had a jackpot of £720 at The Cuddie Brae. This wasn’t won but as that particular quiz is more established, the Open The Box game is run a bit differently. Once the jackpot at The Old Colliery rises above £200 there will be a second attempt to win half the jackpot but set to a maximum of £250. In the recent case at The Cuddie Brae, a £300 half jackpot was won just a couple of weeks ago.
Currently, the ‘actual jackpot’, that is the value of funds accumulated towards payouts, is sitting at £70. I am personally funding the balancing £30 to make the jackpot £100. Once the ‘actual jackpot’ fund exceeds £100, it will begin to rise.

Free Answers Giveaway
Every day, before any particular open quiz, I give away a free answer to one of the questions for the quiz of that night. The team which answers correctly first on the night will get an extra 25 point bonus added to their score. In a recent quiz, these 25 points were crucial to the quiz winning team on the night, without it, they would have been second.
