The Buccleuch 01/05/23

Tonight’s Winners are Crazy Mixed Up Kids!

Winners – Crazy Mixed Up Kids (And not only in name!)

It was another decent turn out tonight.

Scoreboard

Crazy Mixed Up Kids ran out the winners tonight with a good victory. The handicapping certainly helps to get the normally poorer teams to get a win. That said, had there been no handicap in play tonight the Crazy Mixed Up Kids would have been second only 5 points behind Muckin Fuppets. The Lonely Wino was third with Dumb and Dumber coming in a poor 4th.

Most teams played to their handicap but the Crazy Mixed Up Kids had one of those nights where it all fell into place. At the other end, Dumb and Dumber had a very poor performance for the second week in a row leaving them last.

Handicaps and How They Are Calculated

There was some discussion regarding the handicaps being capped at a certain level. This is how I used to do things as I thought the higher handicap teams had an unfair advantage. After running with that theory for some time I abandoned it when we resumed after the Covid debacle. This has not applied since that time at any venue I have run the quiz. It turns out that it is best to run with the uncapped handicaps. The weaker teams should not be punished further by limiting their handicaps. This has resulted in better finishes for those teams and a more competitive scoreboard.

As explained many times in the past, the handicaps are calculated based on the average of actual points scored over the past 5 quizzes that each team has attended. This has nothing, zilch, ZERO to do with whatever position any team finishes in. Handicaps are used in any multitude of amateur sports and competitions to even out the playing field. This is exactly what it does so prevents the same few teams from winning week after week.

It is getting tiring explaining this over and over again. It is the way it is and it works. If any team would like a more complete explanation then please email me as the quiz is being continuously interrupted with the same **** regularly. I have no time before, during, or after a quiz to discuss this, yet again.

UPDATE: I decided to explain this using a working example on Excel but to be honest I am half an hour in and find it is WAY TOO MUCH WORK! I don’t have the time to micro-explain how the handicaps are done so I am not going to do so.

Nearest Wins

At the end of the standard rounds of questions, the Crazy Mixed Up Kids had it won with no other team being able to catch them. The nearest wins question was won by The Lonely Wino taking her score to within 5 points of the winners.

Worst Team Of The Night

Tonight the crappy team award goes to Dumb and Dumber finishing last. They have the privilege of owning the Joker card until their next quiz when they will be awarded a numpty bonus of 50 points.

Jackpot Games

We had our first jackpot game tonight.

We played our first game of Take It Or Leave It tonight. A player was selected at random to eliminate the boxes to find out how much ‘HARD CASH’ they would win. The jackpot started at £25 to get the ball rolling.

The Muckin Fuppets were lucky to be selected to play. It all started well by eliminating many of the £1 boxes but ultimately the higher value boxes began to fall. Eventually, the jackpot box was gone and we were left with the chance of winning either £1 or £2. I parted with £2 on the night.

Next week the jackpot will be £28, will we have a winner?

Music Bingo

Our theme this week was Top Streamed By Year featuring videos of the top streamed music video from each year since the UK music chart began. It is strange how the big singing along was to the old cheesey tunes.

I am always looking for new themes to base the music bingo on so if any of you have any ideas, I’d like to hear them

We paid out £7 for a line and £16 for the full house.

Book Your Table Now!

If you would like to book a table to ensure you get a good position in the room then contact The Buccleuch on 0131 563 9901. Remember to tell them how many people will be coming. Also if you later find you cannot attend then call again to cancel. Please also respect that regular teams have their regular tables.

Get In Early!

It would be a great help if all teams could be there and ready for 645 pm. This will allow time to get any connection issues sorted as well as the handicapping in place and ready to start.

It’s good to see you all so eager to come along.

Let’s make it better by inviting some friends along!
