Bon de Quiz Claims Victory in Nail-Biting Finish!

Bon de Quiz secured our quiz victory by a narrow margin, edging out The Fighting Mongooses and Penis Flytrap. The persistent buzz of their distinctive buzzer, which grew somewhat grating as the night progressed, accompanied their substantial lead in the early quiz rounds. However, the dynamics shifted as rival teams rallied later on, intensifying the competition for the top spot.
Despite maintaining a lead of approximately 300 points, Bon de Quiz faced a nail-biting conclusion. As we approached the nearest wins question, their advantage dwindled to a mere 39 points, with The Flying Mongooses poised to overtake them into first place.
Starting the night with 25 teams, we experienced the usual attrition, concluding with around 20 teams that had begun the quiz. A few latecomers joined, although they had little chance of catching up. These teams are indicated in orange and red on the scoreboard.
Scoreboard
With the reigning champions, the Crusty Jugglers, absent, the field was open for a new team to take the lead. Bon de Quiz appeared worthy of the title but just managed to cross the finishing line first, with a closely grouped pack of teams behind them.
Nearest Wins Question
As we reached the end of the regular quiz rounds, the Nearest Wins Question became the decisive moment. Bon de Quiz, leading by only 39 points, faced stiff competition from The Flying Mongooses and other teams positioned to claim 2nd or 3rd place with the 100 points at stake.
The questions was…..
Q. How many steps did it take Usain Bolt to complete his record-breaking 100-metre run at the 2009 World Athletics Championships?
A. 41 steps from start to finish line, with an average length of 2.44m
Penis Flytrap hit the mark precisely, with two other teams missing by just one step. This earned Penis Flytrap 100 points and secured third place for the night.
Numpty Bonus Points
Numpty Bonus Points were awarded to the Italian Stallions, who will receive an additional 50 points at the start of their next quiz. Other teams finishing below them were not eligible due to participating only in part of the quiz.
Our First Night Using The Handicaps
Introducing our handicapping system aimed to level the playing field and motivate less experienced teams to continue attending. Although it’s too early to gauge the full impact, the system averages each team’s scores over their last five quizzes, aiming to adjust their handicaps and foster fair competition.
How It Works
- Each team’s score is recorded at the end of every quiz.
- Their handicap is calculated by averaging their last 5 quizzes.
- This is based on their rolling scores, regardless of the weeks between attendance.
- Before each quiz, a spreadsheet determines the points to be awarded, starting with the best team at ‘0’ points.
- Teams are then allocated scores relative to the best team, with the lowest handicaps at the bottom of the scoreboard.
Levelling the Playing Field
The handicapping system aims to level the playing field, ensuring that even average performances from each team lead to similar scores. While exceptional performances elevate a team, they simultaneously lower their handicap, making subsequent victories more challenging.
As more teams become regular attendees, we anticipate seeing the full benefits of this handicapping system in the weeks to come.
