Premier SpeedQuizzing Triumph: Posh and Common Spice Emerge Victorious in Edinburgh Street Food Showdown!

Posh and Common is our winning team tonight

In a thrilling 3-team shootout at Edinburgh Street Food, Posh and Common Spice clinched the top spot, surprising everyone, including formidable competitors like Autocorrect Is My Worst Enema and Team Otis. The London-based Posh and Common Spice showcased their quiz prowess, strategically staying ahead and claiming victory.

As the quiz unfolded with 31 teams initially, we witnessed a dynamic mix of experienced and new participants. Only four teams had previously joined, welcoming 27 new groups to the Premier SpeedQuizzing experience. The competition was fierce, and we’re excited to see this growing trend every week.

Scoreboard

Bon de Quiz demonstrated another strong performance, but new visiting teams proved a bit too formidable this week. Kudos to Sicknotes and The Grinches, securing impressive 4th and 5th positions on their debut.

Nearest Wins Question

By the time we reached the nearest wins question, there were only 2 teams within reach of our leader. No other team could even take the third-place prize as the top 3 were so far ahead after their outstanding performances. With 100 points up for grabs, we prepared for the last question of the night.

The question was…..

Q. To the nearest minute, what do you get if you add up the world records for fastest completion times of the video games ‘Crash Bandicoot’, ‘Super Mario World’ and ‘Spyro the Dragon’, as of January 2023?

A. Brazilian gamer Kojiroctr finished Crash in 40 mins 55 secs
Brazilian gamer FURiOUS completed Mario in 41 mins
Canadian gamer ChrisLBC completed Spyro in 38 mins 31 secs)

Total of 120 minutes and 26 seconds

Our last-placed team Pivot were closest with a ‘guess’ of 125 minutes. This earned them 100 points and secured third place for the night.

Numpty Bonus Points

Numpty Bonus Points were awarded to Pivot, who will receive an additional 50 points at the start of their next quiz.

Handicaps

With only four returning teams, 27 new teams started with a basic handicap of 80% of the average of returning teams. This innovative handicapping system aims to level the playing field, ensuring fair competition and encouraging teams to improve over time.

For new teams, remember that even if your evening didn’t go as planned, your starting score will be higher next time due to the handicap calculation. Consistency is key, and we look forward to seeing your progress in the coming weeks.

Please remember to either use the same team name each week or at least let me know, as early as possible, that you have changed the name. This is for your benefit so your handicap can be set properly before we start.

How It Works

  1. Each team’s score is recorded at the end of every quiz.
  2. Their handicap is calculated by averaging their last 5 quizzes.
  3. This is based on their rolling scores, regardless of the weeks between attendance.
  4. Before each quiz, a spreadsheet determines the points to be awarded, starting with the best team at ‘0’ points.
  5. Teams are then allocated scores relative to the best team, with the lowest handicaps at the bottom of the scoreboard.

Levelling the Playing Field

The handicapping system aims to level the playing field, ensuring that even average performances from each team lead to similar scores. While exceptional performances elevate a team, they simultaneously lower their handicap, making subsequent victories more challenging.

As more teams become regular attendees, we anticipate seeing the full benefits of this handicapping system in the weeks to come.

Prizes

1st place – £50 voucher to spend at ESF
2nd place – Huge jug of beer
3rd place – Chips for the team

ESF quizzes are powered by Philamhor Brewing Co. with beers ‘Born and Brewed In Edinburgh’.

Finally, a HUGE thank you to Edinburgh Street Food for hosting our weekly quiz.
